Lymphatic drainage massage is a specific form of massage that stimulates the natural circulation of the lymph throughout the body and improves the metabolism. This helps to eliminate toxins and waste products from our body tissues.
The lymphatic system regulates and refreshes our immune system. It can become blocked by a lack of exercise, insufficient rest, poor diet or poor bowel habits. Fluid builds up which causes our entire system to become toxic. This makes us feel sluggish and more open to viral and bacterial diseases.
Our lymphatic system carries a colourless, watery liquid called 'lymph'. It contains a high number of lymphocytes, or white blood cells. This lymphatic fluid circulates to cleanse and nourish our body tissues. Lymph contains protein molecules, salts, glucose, urea, and other substances which are carried throughout the body.
The lymphatic system, does not have a pump like our blood, which is moved along the blood vessels by our heart. Instead it is a network of tiny vessels that merge to form larger vessels, and these connect to several hundred small filtering stations, called lymph nodes. These are small bean-shaped lymph glands.
A crucial role is played by our lymphatic system, because it maintains a healthy fluid balance in our body, and eliminates waste. Waste products include excess water, proteins, viruses and bacteria, minerals, dead cells and fat molecules. Such substances are partially neutralized in the lymph nodes.
Manual lymphatic drainage can help our body fight infection, and speed up the healing process, and recovery from illness. This massage is particularly useful when undertaking a general detox or weight loss program. It can also be beneficial in the reduction of cellulite, and can reduce fluid retention caused by prolonged inactivity. It is used in the treatment of lymphoedema.
Lymphatic drainage massage has added advantages, in that it gives you clean, healthy pores, improving the appearance of the skin and reducing swelling and puffiness caused by water retention, poor circulation or pregnancy. It speeds up the healing of scar tissue, which can reduce and improve the appearance of stretch marks.
