with Malcolm Pritchard BSc DHP (NC) MNRHP
I hold a diploma in Hypno-psychotherapy from the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (DHP (NC)) and am also a member of the National Register of Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists (NRHP). I have been practicing since 1999.
Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation which you allow yourself to enter. During hypnosis suggestions are absorbed more easily by the unconscious mind, allowing change to take place more easily. Everybody drifts in and out of light trance states throughout the day, hypnotherapy uses an enhanced form these states to make lasting changes more easily. As many psychological and physical problems are associated with different states of body physiology (trance states) hypnotherapy is an ideal choice for therapy.
During hypnosis you are aware of what is happening, and if you wanted to, you could easily wake up. You allow yourself to enter the hypnotic trance state, the therapist acting as a facilitator. It is impossible to get stuck in hypnosis as trance states are a natural part of daily life.
Much of our human creativity is accessed in different states of consciousness, have you ever noticed how some days you feel like tackling a creative endeavour, whereas on other days the inspiration is not there? Also many people report instances where they are say, driving and cannot remember the last ten miles, this is an example of a light trance state.
Other forms of psychotherapy can also be used during the hypnotic trance which often enhances the process, effecting change more rapidly.
In my practice I have an orientation towards the bodymind, understanding that the body and mind are parts of the same system. This approach has led me towards some of the holistic eastern ideas in therapy which complement the more western approach.
A typical therapy session is around 1 hour, the first session involves a discussion of relevant personal history and some simple introductory hypnotic techniques. In follow up sessions there is a progression towards more involved techniques of therapy.
My own particular areas of specialism include, weight loss, stop smoking, building confidence, life coaching, stress management, chronic fatigue (maximising your energy), overcoming fears and phobias, improving driving confidence and solutions for insomnia.
